Tesla hid a The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Easter Egg in its Autopilot software release

Tesla Motors is known for hiding easter eggs in its software and the recent Autopilot v7.0 update is no exception. A year ago, a Model S owner figured out that by entering “007” in the access code of his car, the rendering of the Model S on the screen changes into James Bond’s submarine Lotus which Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought at an auction in 2013. Earlier this year, it was a Space Balls reference with the Ludicrous update and now it is an allusion to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a comedy science fiction series created by Douglas Adams. In the series, a group of hyper-intelligent beings ask a supercomputer “The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything”. It takes the supercomputer 7.5 million years to compute the answer which ends up being “42“.

After Tesla’s recent update, the Model S asked an owner, who shared his experience on the Tesla Motors Club forum, to name his car. The owner was eager to start playing with the new features of the vehicle and he couldn’t think of anything quick enough, so he entered “42”.

Later on, when he got back to his Model S, the name of the vehicle on the dashboard had changed to read “Life, the Universe, and Everything”.
