Audi releases new renderings of the quattro ahead of IAA unveiling [image gallery]

Last month we reported on Audi planning to unveil the quattro, a new SUV-crossover equipped with Audi’s all-electric e-tron drivetrain, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which runs from the 17th to 27th of September. Today the company released more advanced renderings of the concept ahead of the media launch expected tomorrow.

Audi expects the e-tron quattro to have a “range of more than 500 kilometers (310 miles)” on a 95 kWh battery pack. It’s important to consider that Audi is based in Germany, meaning that they mostly based their range on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), which is known to be less restrictive than the EPA standard. For example, Tesla’s Model S 85D gets 270 EPA rated miles, but 330 NEDC rated miles.

Audi says that the quattro has the best drag coefficient of any SUV: 0.25. It will be interesting to compare the results to Tesla’s Model X which is expected to have good aerodynamic performance much like the Model S built on the same platform. The Model S has a drag coefficient of 0.24. The Model X’s drag coefficient is expected to be release at its launch on September 29th.

The quattro has a total output of 320 kW and can reach 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.6 seconds. It has a top speed of 210 km/h (130.5 mph).

For the moment, the quattro is a concept, but Audi seems to have every intention to bring the car to production in “early 2018”.

Yeah it’s a nice step in the right direction for Audi, but it sounds a lot like a Model X in term of specs, but 3 years later.

Any guess how much this will start at?

Guess yes. I wouldn’t be surprised if it tries to compete with Tesla’s Model X which starts at $80,000 USD.
